....McGilvray Road - Seven Bridges Project - Straddling the border of
Trempealeau and La Crosse counties, and the Black and Mississippi rivers, is a historical treasure made more beautiful by its natural wonders. The 4,000 acre Van Loon Wildlife Area is a rich, hardwood swamp in the bottom lands of the Black River before it spills into the Mississippi River. While a swamp hike sounds like a muddy affair, visitors to the Van Loon can remain quite dry by walking 2 miles of the old McGilvray Road. Hikers can cross a half-dozen 19th century steel bowstring and arch truss bridges.

**..Wisconsin Birding with Jacamar Tours - in conjunction with the
Madison Audubon Society, Jim Marrari offers affordable, quality birding experiences in Wisconsin. A portion of trip fees helps support the society's programs. The groups are small (usually 8-12 people) and the trips are suitable for beginning to intermediate birders.  The guides take the time to teach you about the birds you see, and you'll also learn about the plant life, local culture, and history of the places you visit.  In addition, you'll meet others who share an interest in birds and, hopefully, have a good time. Three trips are offered in 2001:
      • Door County Birds and Wildflowers - May 11-13
      • Duluth Hawk Migration Festival  - September 13-16
      • Mississippi River Fall Migration Spectacle - October 26-28

North American Specialities in Wisconsin

Information derived from Sibley & Monroe checklists in Thayer's Birder's Diary - Version 2.5.
These counts will differ in minor ways from counts based on the ABA classification,
but an international checklist system was required to enable world-wide
country to country comparisons. These speciality birds may be uncommon, or extremely rare
at this location, or may only be present in migration. However, documented sightings of each species
noted below have been made in Wisconsin. Consult the Breeding Bird Survey or
Christmas Bird Count data on the Patuxent Wildlife Research Center website
to determine the "best" place to see each bird. Species printed in blue are endangered.
