of myriad riches. There are sparkling blue waters, magnificent snow-white beaches, and fertile coastal marshes. There are nineteenth century forts, shaded picnic areas, winding nature trails, and comfortable campgrounds. Diverse and abounding with wildlife, the park is not a single block of land but a mosaic. It includes 11 separate units stretching eastward 150 miles from West Ship Island, Mississippi, to the eastern tip of Santa Rosa Island, Florida.

A colony of an estimated 50,000 cattle egrets nest on Bluff Lake. In addition, the refuge includes 12 colonies of red-cockaded woodpeckers, a bird listed on the rare and endangered species list. North American Specialities in Mississipi

Information derived from Sibley & Monroe checklists in Thayer's Birder's Diary - Version 2.5.
These counts will differ in minor ways from counts based on the ABA classification,
but an international checklist system was required to enable world-wide
country to country comparisons. These speciality birds may be uncommon, or extremely rare
at this location, or may only be present in migration. However, documented sightings of each species
noted below have been made in Mississippi. Consult the Breeding Bird Survey or
Christmas Bird Count data on the Patuxent Wildlife Research Center website
to determine the "best" place to see each bird. Species printed in blue are endangered.
