....Video Birding in Hawaii - by Ronald Orenstein. We visited four
islands in two weeks - recreating as best I could the itinerary of my first visit. That long-ago trip was with one of the first people to organize overseas trips for birders (I'm Canadian, so Hawaii is overseas for me!). This time, except for guides in a few places, we did it on our own, spending three nights each on Oahu, Kauai and Maui, and five on the Big Island - two at the Volcano House in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, and three in Kailua-Kona.
    ...
....Kawai Nui Marsh - remains the largest freshwater wet land
in the State of Hawaii. Kawai Nui's natural, cultural, and educational values have been widely recognized as significant by many government agencies, private organizations, and citizens' groups. Kawai Nui serves as a nursery ground for marine organisms, and a wildlife habitat for endangered water birds.

....Midway Atoll - by Bill Scholtz. Midway Atoll is the second to last
group of islands in the Hawaiian chain.  It is a little over 1000 miles northwest of Hawaii. Midway is where The Battle of Midway was fought during WWII and until 1996 had a Naval Air Station.  In 1996 it was handed over to the Fish and Wildlife service to become a Nation Wildlife Refuge. In May of 2001 I visited Midway to photograph birds.

....Trip Report: Kauai, Oahu, Hawaii, September 14 - October 1, 1994
by Dave Eshbaugh. I traveled and birded in Hawaii from September 14th to October 1st, 1994. These are some notes that I pulled together that might be helpful to anyone visiting Kauai, Oahu, and Hawaii. There are some obvious holes in my treatment, partly because this was my first trip to the islands, and my non-birding spouse seemed to think that there were things other than birding to do in Hawaii.
    ...
....Trip Report: Oahu, Kauai (Hawaii), March(?) 1995, by David Powell.
I recently spent 10 days in Hawaii, 3 days on Oahu and a week on Kauai. While the trip was not primarily a birding trip, I did a reasonable (my wife would say unreasonable) amount of birding on both islands.
    ...
....Trip Report: Hawai'i, August 8-31, 1995, by José Tavares.
This was not a birding trip, although some birding was done whenever possible. From 10 to the 17th August I was attending a conference in Waikiki (Honolulu, Oahu). After that, some holidays were spent with two non-birders: 18-19th August around Oahu, 20th in Honolulu, 21-27th around the "big island" (Hawai'i), and 28-30th back in Honolulu.
    ...
....Trip Report: Hawaii (Hawaii and Oahu), December 13-23, 1995, by
Urs Geiser and Mary Hobein. I had the opportunity to give an invited talk at a scientific conference in Honolulu and added some vacation time with my wife Mary. Obviously, we didn't spend every minute on the islands birding. Apart from the work aspect of the trip, Mary isn't exactly a birder, although she enjoys looking at well-visible, still birds, especially if they are colorful or otherwise interesting to look at. Then there is so much else to see and experience: scenery, cultural and
historic attractions, the beach, underwater activities, romantic moments etc. that we wanted to enjoy as well. This was especially true since this was our first trip in a long time without our teenage (step)daughter who is at a difficult age. All in all, our birding was relaxed, and we didn't go too much out of our way to find rare
endemics (the grand prize of any Hawaiian birding).
    ...
....Trip Report: Hawaii, Maui, Kauai, Oahu, April 27 - May 26, 1996, by
Mike Feighner. I visited the four main Islands: Hawaii (the Big Island), Maui, Kauai, and Oahu. This was my firstreal trip outside of the ABA area. A total of 88 species were seen during the entire four-island trip of which 57 were lifers.
    ...
....Trip Report: Hawaii (Big Island), August 16-23, 1997, by David Powell.
My wife and I went to the Big Island for our 20th wedding anniversary. As a long time non-birding spouse, she was very accommodating in allowing me a reasonable amount of time to go birding. My birding was done in Volcano NP, a wonderful place to visit even if you don't see any birds, Puu Laau, Hakalau Forest NWR, Manuka State Park, Puu Anahulu, Mauna Lani Bay Resort, and along the Saddle Road.
    ...
....Trip Report: Hawaii, Kauai, Oahu, December 2-16, 1997,
by BB Hahn. Snow was falling the morning of our departure from Denver. We giggled and congratulated ourselves for missing at least one storm as we took off for warmer climes.
    ...
    ....Trip Report: Kaua'i and Hawai'i, December 18, 1997 -
January 11, 1998. Jennifer Matkin. We spent the first two weeks on Kaua'i, staying in Princeville, and eleven days on the Big Island, staying in Kona. This was my sixth extended trip to the Hawaiian Islands, but my first as a birder.
    ...
....Trip Report: Maui and Kauai (Hawai'i) , January 8-20, 1998, by
Genie Silver. My husband and I were in Maui January 8-14 and in Kauai January 14-20. Although not primarily a birding trip, I did a lot of birding and wanted to file the following report.
    ...
....Trip Report: Midway Atoll -- Home of the Gooney Birds - January 25 -
February 1, 1998. By Ron Saldino. My wife and I spent 6 days and 7 nights on Midway Atoll from 1-25-98 to 2-1-98. This is a relatively new destination for birders and bird photographers. Since the US Navy left the Island last year, after an extensive cleanup, the USF&WS and Midway Phoenix Corp. are jointly managing this NWR. F&W manages the wildlife and Midway Phoenix operates all the infrastructure (runway, hanger, fuel tanks, power plant, water, barracks, food, etc.). Midway Atoll is about 1200 miles northwest of Honolulu.
    ...
....Trip Report: Kauai, April 1998, by Tom Harrison. I once published
an article on all the crazy places we birders hang out. You know: garbage dumps, sewage ponds, landfills. Seemed like one of those rules of birding that the best birds were in yuckiest places. That was before I went to Kauai. Kauai is heaven on earth. Beaches. Mountains. Waterfalls. Rain forest. And wonderful birding. My wife and I went to Kauai at the end of April and it was one of the most relaxing, enjoyable vacations we've had.
    ...
....Trip Report: Hawaii Big Island, July 1-7, 1998, by Tom Grey.
My (semibirding and birder tolerant) wife and I spent the first week of this month on the island of Hawaii, our first visit there. I also managed to see a fair number of the local birds in what is maybe the least birdy week of the year there (which might at least partly explain why I didn't run across a single other birder during my week on the island).
    ...
....Trip Report: Oahu, Midway, Maui, Kauai, March 19 - April 2, 1999.
by John Haas. I went on a birding trip of a lifetime from 3/19 to 4/2/99. the areas covered were Oahu, Midway, Maui, and Kauai!
    ...
....Trip Report: Maui, Oahu, Kauai, March 25 - April 8, 1999, by
Tom Bishop. My wife (who birds) and our 3 boys (who don't) had a great time snorkeling, reading, watching TV, and birding. Although there aren't a lot of species, you get out to the most beautiful and wonderful places, it is sunny, the cool tradewinds, the clean air--ah, but I digress.
    ...
....Trip Report: Hawaii (Big Island), December 18-24, 1999 by Ron Hoff.
My wife and I went to the big island of Hawaii for the week of December 18-24 to try to find all the big island endemics we could. Most days were fairly easy walking and the locations easy to find. Although the island is only about 82 miles wide by 95 miles long, we drove a total of 900+ miles in our time there.
    ...
....Trip Report: Hawaii, April 2-16, 2000 "Birding the Big Island:
Something to Crow About", by Tom Harrison. The Hawaiian Islands have some of the most beautiful and some of the most rare birds in the world. Two years ago my wife and I enjoyed a vacation on Kauai during which I became enchanted by the birds there. This year, when we decided to return to Hawaii, my wife, Starr, though a non-birder, suggested we select another island so that I could see different species.
    ...
....Trip Report: Oahu & Kauai, December 13-26, 2000, by Urs Geiser.
In December 2000 I had the opportunity to attend a scientific conference in Honolulu. The rest of my family joined me afterwards, and we spent another week in Kauai. There we stayed the entire week in Lihue, on the east shore of the island and about the same distance from the end of the main coastal highway in both directions. The northwestern Na Pali coast is incredibly steep and not reachable by road. The interior of the island consists of wooded, largely  inaccessible highlands with one of the wettest places on earth (Mt. Wai'ale, over 440 inches of rain per year).
    ...
....Trip Report: Hawaii: The Big Island, November 15th - 28th, 2002,
by Elise Faike. To escape cold snowy weather and head for warmer climes where we could also find new birds, my husband Dave and I flew directly from the mainland to the Big Island of Hawaii on  November 15 and stayed until November 28, 2002. Mid-November is a good time to go, because the holiday season hasn't started yet so transportation and lodging prices are more reasonable, blossoms are abundant and birds are active. Very few other places on earth combine relatively safe volcano viewing and world travel with superb snorkeling, hiking and birding.

North American Specialities in Hawaii

Information derived from Sibley & Monroe checklists in Thayer's Birder's Diary - Version 2.5.
These counts will differ in minor ways from counts based on the ABA classification,
but an international checklist system was required to enable world-wide
country to country comparisons. The North American speciality birds may be uncommon, or extremely rare
at this location, or may only be present in migration. However, documented sightings of
each species noted below have been made in this location. Consult the Breeding Bird Survey or
Christmas Bird Count data on the Patuxent Wildlife Research Center website
to determine the "best" place to see each bird. Birds in blue are endangered.
