....Trip Report: Philippines - August 2002. By Todd Pepper. During a
recent two week business trip to the Philippines a number of opportunities arose to do some birding. In total ninety trip birds were recorded on Palawan with 3 being "heard only" birds. Of the remaining 87 species, 62 were life birds. Of note, 12 of the 15 endemic species for Palawan were seen during the trip. With the aid of a tape recorder, which I forgot to bring, we might have actually seen 14 of the 15 endemics, as two of the "heard only" birds were Palawan Scops-Owl and Falcated Ground Babbler that typically respond well to recorded calls.

    ....Trip Report: Philippines.  March 30 - April 14, 1996.
By Richard Fairbank. This report is on a short trip to selected sites in the Philippines. We had no hassles at all and found the Philippines a very friendly, inexpensive, country. The trip was very successful although hard work due to low bird densities.

....Trip Report: Mindanao, Cebu, Bohol, and Luzon (Philippines)
This trip report is provided courtesy of Urs Geiser's Trip Report Archive. March 2-26, 2000, by Aidan G. Kelly. The Philippine archipelago consists of just over 1100 islands, though the major portion of the land area is taken up by just nine main islands. A total bird list of 556 species has been recorded in The Philippines and an impressive total of 185 of these are endemic, including one endemic family, the Rhabdornises, of which there are 3 species. There has been much publicity in recent years about the bleak prospects for the unique fauna and flora of The Philippines due to the continuous destruction of the forests and other natural habitats there. Much of the lowland forests have now been turned to paddyfields and most of the highland and montane forests have been logged. Many Philippine endemic bird species are threatened with extinction with little hope of long term survival. The Philippines has one of the most threatened and endangered avifauna of anywhere else in the World.

      Geiser's Trip Report Archive. December 23, 2000 - January 7, 2001,
by Chuck Heikkinen & Delia Unson. We stayed with Delia's parents in Manila and had the use of a car. We alternated between family and friend time and birding. As a result, we relied on birding forays we could make easily using Manila as a base. Assuming one doesn't have a car available, all the places we went to are reachable by public transportation.

....Trip Report: Birding on Bohol and Olongo Islands, The Philippines,
December 2003, by Dan Jones. During a December 2003 trip to visit my fiancee in Cebu, we were able to make short trips to Bohol and Olongo Island to do some birding. All birding was done without tapes at a somewhat relaxed pace.

Endemics and Specialities

in the Philippines

Brown-banded (Luzon) Rail - THREATENED - Photo copyright Vladamir Dinets

Information on endemics and specialities is derived from Sibley & Monroe checklists and bird distribution lists in Thayer's Birder's Diary - Version 2.05, supplemented by material found in Where to watch birds in Asia  - by Nigel Wheatley, with additional information from BirdArea from Santa Barbara Software. Asian speciality birds, while not endemic, are those that can only be found in three or less countries of Asia. Information on endangered birds is derived from the IUCN Red List, Birdlife International, and supporting data bases developed by Ian Patton, of Merlin Species Watcher.  The endemic, endangered and speciality birds may be uncommon, extremely rare vagrants, may be extirpated in the country now or may only be present in migration. However, documented sightings of each species noted below have been made in the Philippines. Philippine Needletail - THREATENED - Photo copyright Vladamir Dinets
