....Man Made Bird Paradise - Al-Ansab Lagoons - Text and pictures by
Hanne and Jens Eriksen. The dawn chorus of birds at Al Ansab Lagoons fills the air. Is this place Arabia? Indeed it is and it is all man-made. Al Ansab Lagoons lie about 30kms west of Muscat, the capital of the Sultanate of Oman.

....Arabian Oryx Sanctuary - Birds recorded over a six year period
on the Jidda' total 168 species. The coastal beaches and lagoons are the habitat of flocks of resident and migrating waders. The small saline and brackish springs act as important vegetated oasis areas, attracting a variety of birds and mammals.

....Trip Report: Oman - Feb 17th-Mar 9th 2002. By John Judge, Dave Hall
and Pete Hall. As yet Oman is not a destination many birders think of but being situated between Europe, Africa and Asia it has excellent birding potential and the production of a superb site guide it may well be on some birders "hit" lists for the future. With two of the group having the chance to visit a relative who lives and works in Oman we were at an advantage and the purchasing of a Land Rover Discovery 4x4 for his wife as a "run around" was an added bonus we then only needed to book the flight which we found with KLM and we were off!  NOTE: This trip report is lavishly illustrated with Oman bird photos.

....Trip Report: United Arab Emirates (with a little Oman) - by Don
Roberson. This is a summary of a five-day visit to the United Arab Emirates, including a very brief visit to adjacent Oman, from 6-10 March 2001. The United Arab Emirates is a popular vacation itinerary for European birders with its desert specialties and impressive migration of Asian breeders.

....Visit to Oman, Land of 1001 stars - February-March, 1995 by
Ruud and Kitty Kampf. Why did we visit Oman? Quite simple, because of the 75th anniversary of KLM-airlines. The whole winter we saw advertisements in the newspaper with three, often quite exotic destinations. In one of the adds there was a flight to Muscat: Dfl 775 or US $ 455. After a short look in the atlas to find Muscat, I phoned the Oman embassy in The Hague. See also Ruud and Kitty's Oman 2000 trip report.

Endemics and Specialities

in Oman

Information on endemics and specialities is derived from Sibley & Monroe checklists and bird distribution lists in Thayer's Birder's Diary - Version 2.5, supplemented by material found in Where to watch birds in Asia  - by Nigel Wheatley. African speciality birds, while not endemic, are those that can only be found in three or less countries of Africa. Information on endangered birds is derived from the IUCN Red List, Birdlife International, and supporting data bases developed by Ian Patton, of Merlin Species Watcher.  The endemic, endangered and speciality birds may be uncommon, extremely rare vagrants, may be extirpated in the country now or may only be present in migration. However, documented sightings of each species noted below have been made in Oman.
