Macedonia Specialities

....Prespa Park - the Prespa Lakes and their surrounding catchment are
unique for their geomorphology, their ecological wealth, and their biodiversity, which gives the area significant international importance. The Prespa Lakes and their surroundings provide habitat for the conservation of various and rare species of flora and fauna and offer refuge for the migratory bird populations. They constitute as well a much needed nesting place for many species of birds threatened with extinction. See also the Society for the Protection of Prespa.
....National Parks - In the Republic of Macedonian there are three
National Parks and one Forest Reserve. This site contains information on:
      • Pelister National Park
      • Mavrovo National Park
      • Galichica National Park
      • Jasen Forest Reserve (see also Birds of the Jasen Reserve
....Trip Report: Balkan Countries, June 22 - July 13, 1997. By Anssi Kristian
Kullberg. We didn't have much time for birding in this country, where we spent three days, two of them in Skopje. One day we went to Tetovo, situated in the Albanian region of Vardar Macedonia. The majority of the town's population are Albanians and so also Muslims. They often understand or speak Italian. In order to get to the mountains we
were near the Albanian border, because I knew that area is one of the last asylums of Bearded Vulture

European Endemics and Specialities

in Macedonia

Information on endemics and specialities is derived from Sibley & Monroe checklists and bird distribution lists in Thayer's Birder's Diary - Version 2.05, supplemented by material found in Where to Watch Birds in Europe and Russia - by Nigel Wheatley. Speciality birds, while not endemic, are those that can only be found in three or less countries of Europe. Species printed in bold italic have only been sighted in Macedonia. Information on endangered birds is derived from the IUCN Red List, Birdlife International, and supporting data bases developed by Ian Patton, of Merlin Species Watcher.  The endemic, endangered and speciality birds may be uncommon, extremely rare vagrants, may be extirpated in the country now or may only be present in migration. However, documented sightings of each species noted below have been made in Macedonia.
