Few birders have visited this former Yugoslavian republic, before or after the ethnic wars of the mid-1990's and few are likely to visit in the future as long as the birds which still occur in Bosnia, from Pygmy Cormorant to Ural Owl, remain easier to see elsewhere and so long as the country is strewn with land mines.

...."Apart from the extreme north along the border with Croatia, where
there still may be remnant unimproved flood-meadows, marshes, lakes, fishponds, and riverine woods along the River Sava and its tributaries, Bosnia is mainly a mountainous country with extensive forests, as well as garrigue and maquis near the Adriatic coast in the south-west. Any marshes, meadows and riverine poplar and willow woods which remain at Hutovo Blato, an ornithological Reserve south of Mostar is southern Bosnia, and contiguous with the Neretva Delta in adjacent Croatia, may still support breeding waterbirds such as the endangered Pygmy Cormorant and Ferruginous Duck. To the north of <ostar, the deciduous forests on the steep mountain slopes above the lakes in the valley known as Boracko jezero may still support Ural Owl and White-backed Woodpecker. Another area that may be worth birding in southern Bosnia is Sutjeska National Park where the mountains rise to 7828 feet at Maglic and support lakes, extensive woodlands and montane pastures. With mammals such as brown bear and grey wolf still believed to be present, the birdlife is likely to be just as exciting."   - Where to Watch Birds in Europe and Russia - by Nigel Wheatley

European Endemics and Specialities

in Bosnia-Herzegovina

Information on endemics and specialities is derived from Sibley & Monroe checklists and bird distribution lists in Thayer's Birder's Diary - Version 2.5, supplemented by material found in Where to Watch Birds in Europe and Russia - by Nigel Wheatley. Speciality birds, while not endemic, are those that can only be found in three or less countries of Europe. Information on endangered birds is derived from the IUCN Red List, Birdlife International, and supporting data bases developed by Ian Patton, of Merlin Species Watcher.  The endemic, endangered and speciality birds may be uncommon, extremely rare vagrants, may be extirpated in the country now or may only be present in migration. However, documented sightings of each species noted below have been made in Bosnia-Herzegovina.
