...."Apart
from the extreme north along the border with Croatia, where
there
still may be remnant unimproved flood-meadows, marshes, lakes, fishponds,
and riverine woods along the River Sava and its tributaries, Bosnia is
mainly a mountainous country with extensive forests, as well as garrigue
and maquis near the Adriatic coast in the south-west. Any marshes, meadows
and riverine poplar and willow woods which remain at Hutovo Blato,
an ornithological Reserve south of Mostar is southern Bosnia, and contiguous
with the Neretva Delta in adjacent Croatia, may still support breeding
waterbirds such as the endangered Pygmy Cormorant and Ferruginous Duck.
To the north of <ostar, the deciduous forests on the steep mountain
slopes above the lakes in the valley known as Boracko jezero may
still support Ural Owl and White-backed Woodpecker. Another area that may
be worth birding in southern Bosnia is Sutjeska National Park where
the mountains rise to 7828 feet at Maglic and support lakes, extensive
woodlands and montane pastures. With mammals such as brown bear and grey
wolf still believed to be present, the birdlife is likely to be just as
exciting." - Where
