....Bukhara
- "This town in Uzbekistan is situated in a large
oasis
in the Kyzylkum Desert and during spring even the gardens of the town attract
migrants. Bukhara is 2 hours by road north of Chardzhou. The best wetlands,
which include fishponds, lie to the south and east of the town. However,
the best birding areas are at the edge of the irrigated farmland, where
there are ponds and reedbeds which support a good selection of waterbirds,
including White-tailed Lapwing. Beyond the cotton fields and orchards which
surround Samarkand, an ancient "Silk Road" city in Uzbekistan, east of
Bukhara, the wooded valleys at the base of the Tien Shan mountain range,
one hour south of the city support many of the specialty birds of the area.
Similar species may be found arolund Chimgan ski resort near Tashkent to
the northeast. - from Where
to watch birds in Asia - by Nigel Wheatley.

Report: Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, June 25 - July 16, 1997. By
Graham
Tebb. From 25 June to 11 July 1997 I was on a business trip to Almaty and
Kurchatov in Kazakhstan and to Tashkent in Uzbekistan. As it was my first
time in the area, I wanted to do a little sightseeing afterwards and was
joined by my wife, a non-birdwatcher but very tolerant of my peculiarities,
and we went to Samarkand, Shakhrisabz and Bukhara as well as to Sijjak,
a small mountain village not far from Tashkent.

Report: Northern Iran and Uzbekistan, September 4-18, 1997. By
Dirk
Raes. After visiting Uzbekistan, some days Kirgizia, one day Tajikistan,
and one day Turkmenistan in October 1994 as independent birdwatchers (together
with my wife Krystyna and friend Bart), I have been asked by the Belgian/Flemish
(Dutch-speaking) tourist organization VTB-VAB to guide a group during 14
days through Northern Iran and along the famous cities from the Great Silk
Road in Uzbekistan. Maybe a few words to start with. There are many,
many interesting species in these two countries. "Unfortunately" the VTB-VAB
trip was a cultural trip and not a birding trip. But let me not complain:
for guiding and translating the group my trip was total free. And anyway
I managed to see some birds! .....
