....Bird-watching in Cape Verde - Bird watching is an activity which
can be enjoyed on any of the islands as a main holiday option or purely as pleasant pastime during your visit. The islands all have their own unique variety of bird life, with special bird breeds associated with certain islands. Some breeds can be very common to all islands, whilst others need a lot of time and special island visits to find.

....Pelagic Birding in Senegal and Cape Verde Islands - by Angus Wilson.

The Cape Verde Peninsula, in the West African nation of Senegal, juts out into the Atlantic Ocean. The seawatching potential of this locality including the Cape Verde Islands has only just been realized and initial results are very exciting.

    ....Trip Report: Cape Verde Islands - November 1 - December 5. 2001.
By Paul Carter. This trip report covers birding done whilst sailing in the Cape Verde Islands, having sailed there from the Canary Islands. Some sightings of the Canaries to Cape Verde crossing are mentioned at the end. I sailed with a friend, Peter Lennox, on his 31 ft. yacht, Nira. Birding was occasional and not always a priority.

....Trip Report: Cape Verde Islands, April 16-22, 1999 by José
Pedro Tavares. The Cabo Verde (Cape Verde) islands are a volcanic archipelago lying 450-800 Km west of Senegal, in west Africa. There are 10 islands and several islets, divided in two groups: the windward islands (ilhas do Barlavento) and the leeward islands (ilhas do sotavento).  Together with Fausto Brito e Abreu, a fellow birder, I spent a week in this former  Portuguese colony, now an independent state, in April 1999.

Endemics and Specialities

in Cape Verde

Information on endemics and specialities is derived from Sibley & Monroe checklists and bird distribution lists in Thayer's Birder's Diary - Version 2.05, supplemented by material found in Where to Watch Birds in Africa - by Nigel Wheatley. African speciality birds, while not endemic, are those that can only be found in three or less countries of Africa. Information on endangered birds is derived from the IUCN Red List, Birdlife International.  The endemic, endangered and speciality birds may be uncommon, extremely rare vagrants, may be extirpated in the country now or may only be present in migration. However, documented sightings of each species noted below have been made in Cape Verde.
