....Introduction to Local Birding Sites - Alabama has a number
of wonderful places to go birding. This site, from the Birmingham Audubon Society, assembles a list of sites here that are favorites of members.
....Gulf Islands National Seashore - this is a place
of myriad riches. There are sparkling blue waters, magnificent snow-white beaches, and fertile coastal marshes. There are nineteenth century forts, shaded picnic areas, winding nature trails, and comfortable campgrounds. Diverse and abounding with wildlife, the park is not a single block of land but a mosaic. It includes 11 separate units stretching eastward 150 miles from West Ship Island, Mississippi, through Alabama, to the eastern tip of Santa Rosa Island, Florida.
....Coastal Treasures - In April, migratory birds travel from their wintering
grounds and funnel back into the United States. En route, many cross the Gulf of Mexico. The first land some of these birds see, after traveling more than 600 miles across open water, is Alabama's inviting coastline.

....Spring Fallout, 1997 - a trip report for New Orleans, Grand Isle,
Louisiana and Dauphin Island, Alabama. April 8-14, 1997 by Doug and Arlene Ripley. This was not a trip for lifers, instead it was perhaps, the birding experience of a lifetime. Our first visit to Grand Isle, Louisiana, and Dauphin Island, Alabama, will remain etched in our memories for many years to come.

North American Specialities in Alabama

Information derived from Sibley & Monroe checklists in Thayer's Birder's Diary - Version 2.02.
These counts will differ in minor ways from counts based on the ABA classification,
but an international checklist system was required to enable world-wide
country to country comparisons. These speciality birds may be uncommon, or extremely rare
at this location, or may only be present in migration. However, documented sightings of
each species noted below have been made in Alabama. Consult the Breeding Bird Survey or
Christmas Bird Count data on the Patuxent Wildlife Research Center website
to determine the "best" place to see each bird. Species printed in blue are endangered.
