....Birdwatching in Timor - It isn't easy birding in Timor. The birds have
adapted to generations of harassment from the locals by adapting great hiding skills. Nevertheless, with perseverence there are many species to see including heaps of endemics. The people are friendlier to birdwatchers than to the birds so it's an enjoyable place to visit. The major sites are relatively easy to access though it may be necessary to charter local transport to some. Information is provided on:
      • Kupang (including Lasiana Beach)

....Bali Barat National Park - Bali Barat National Park

lies at the western side of Bali and is 77,000 ha, some 10% of Bali's total land area. The park is the last refuge of one of the most endangered birds of the world: the Bali Mynah or Starling. (For more information on this extremely endangered bird - only 12 left in the wild - click here.) Bali Barat is mountainous and consists of primary monsoon forest, mangrove forest, savannah and coral islands. The peninsular Prapat Agung, with its extensive web of footpaths, is the most accessible part of the park.

....Birdwatching Areas: Gunung Ambang Nature Reserve, North
Sulawesi: by Jon Riley, from OBC Bulletin 32, December 2000. The Indonesian island of Sulawesi, lying at the heart of Wallacea, is famous for its unique array of species: at least 88 bird species are found nowhere else in the world. The majority of these endemics are restricted to the island's montane areas and has become familiar to birdwatchers visiting the impressive Lore Lindu National Park in central Sulawesi (1-3). However, away from Lore Lindu, many mountain ranges remain little explored.

....Birdwatching areas - Sangihe and Talaud islands, Indonesia
by Jim C. Wardill and Jon Riley, from OBC Bulletin 29, May 1999. The remote Sangihe and Talaud islands are situated in the Celebes Sea between Sulawesi and the Philippine island of Mindanao. At the northern limit of the fascinating Wallacean biogeographical region, the islands are home to nine endemic species, five of which are endangered.

....An expedition to Damar Island, South West Maluku, Indonesia:
by Colin Trainor, OBC Bulletin 36, December 2002. Shaped like a dinosaurs head, with a steaming fumarole emitting discrete clouds of sulphur through a hypothetical nostril, the island of Damar has lain in wait for birders for over 100 years. That is, until recent work in August 2001 by BirdLife International to rediscover the Damar Flycatcher Ficedula henrici.

....Trip Report: Lore Lindu, Sulawesi, Indonesia, September 2001. By
Susan Myers. I have just returned from a trip to Sulawesi and Bali with Chris Lester and Jan Smith. We visited Tangkoko, Bogani Nani Watabone and Lore Lindu in Sulawesi. I would say it was a very successful trip with some great sightings although bird density was notably low. I would encourage anyone to visit Sulawesi as the birding is fabulous, it is perfectly safe and tourism will help conservation efforts.

....Trip Report: Bali, Indonesia - September 2001 - by Susan Myers.
Our main objective here was obviously to see the Bali Myna, which we did. We found the logistics of this to be very easy. Just charter a vehicle or catch the bus to Gilimanuk, then drop into the park office near the giant dragon statue where you will find a park employee who will help you. We paid 900,000 Rupiah for 3 of us which included the guide's fee, the boat hire and a donation for the captive breeding program.

....Bird observations in Sulawesi & Halmahera in July/August 1997 - by
Teus Luijendijk. In July/August 1997, we undertook a birding trip to the Indonesian islands of Sulawesi and Halmahera. Our main goal was to see as many different bird species as possible (especially the endemics) and to enjoy the nature in general. In this report I present the data that could be useful for future visitors. Apart from a bird list, I have tried to recollect and put to paper as much information as possible on sites, accommodation, trails, etc.

....Trip Report: Lombok (Indonesia), September 25-29, 1995 by
Susan Myers. We made a short trip to Lombok after a three week trip to Irian Jaya. A total of 71 species of bird and two species of mammal were observed. Lombok is a small island in Indonesia belonging to the Nusa Tenggara group otherwise known as the Lesser Sundas. It is a volcanic island dominated by Gunung Rinjani and lies a short distance across the sea from Bali.

We decided to go on King Bird Tours Lesser Sundas Tour because it would allow us to realize two of our long-time dreams. Nancy's was to see a Komodo Dragon, and Allen's was to see Indonesian birds. The tour began in Bali and went to Sumbawa (briefly), Komodo, and Flores Islands. We skipped the last week, which went to Timor and Sumba, and added a short tour of Bali at the beginning to give us an opportunity to find Bali Myna and a few other Java/Bali endemics.

....Trip Report: Birding in Seram, Kai and Tanimbar - Maluku - Indonesia.
By Filip Verbelen. June 24 - August 12, 1994. Having spent 4 months in Indonesia the previous years (Sumatra, Java, Bali [1992] and Flores, Sulawesi and Halmahera [1993]) I had planned to come back to Indonesia for some more "off the beaten track" destinations to concentrate on some endemic specialities of Maluku and in the hope to reach some really remote forest areas.  Seram, Kai and Tanimbar certainly were the right choice for that type of challenging travelling. These destinations are probably not the best places to go for a first time Indonesian visitor since you'll need to speak some Bahasa Indonesia to explain to the locals (and the police!) why you are coming to this remote places. Birdwise, Halmahera is certainly the richest island to visit in Maluku. The destinations I went to hold a lot of specialists species (endemics), but if you want to see a lot of species, these are not the places to go.

by Filip Verbelen. March 20 - March 30, 1997. A report of the birds seen on a trip to Taliabu, including a comprehensive guide, with detailed maps and site info to find the endemics. Practical info on how to get there, where to eat and where to sleep.

....Trip Report: Sumatra (Indonesia). This trip report is provided courtesy
of Urs Geiser's Trip Report Archive.  April 5-16, 1998 by Trevor and
Annie Quested. Sumatra is a birders' paradise in Indonesia has lush rainforests, exotic fauna and flora, and sparkling rivers. With some 600 species, Sumatra is second only to Irian Jaya in the sheer variety of its birdlife. About three quarters of these birds are resident, though only 17 are endemic. Sadly, many species are endangered by clearing of land for settlement, logging and hunting, and some are now sighted only rarely.

clear that this report is only useful for those who, like me, only have limited time to spend for birding when visiting Java. In my opinion, (short) visits to the Bogor Botanical Garden, to the Gunung Gede/Pangrango N.P. and to the Muara Angke Wetland Reserve, all well accessible within limited time from Jakarta, will produce the most optimal bird list.

....Trip Report: Borneo/Sabah, May - June 2003, by Stuart White
and Mike Clarke. The aim of our trip was to see as many pittas and endemic birds as possible, a total of 22 endemics was deemed respectable. Also the two hornbills we had missed in Thailand and Western Malaysia and a wild Orang-utan. On the whole the trip was a  huge success, we saw 250 species of bird and lots of animals.  Danum Valley proved as hard as everybody had warned but Mount Kinabalu was more than enough compensation.

....Red and Blue Lory Recovery Project, Indonesia - operated by
the Loro Parque Fundación. The Red and Blue Lory Eos histrio, endemic to Sangihe and the Talaud Islands in Indonesia, has seriously declined in the wild state, to the extent that the nominate subspecies from Sangihe might be extinct, especially if hybridisation has occurred with the introduced subspecies talautensis. Habitat alteration has occurred on the islands, but the major threat in recent years has been from trapping, even though the species is included in Appendix I of the Convention on the International Trade of   Endangered Species (CITES) and the Indonesian Government has set a zero capture quota for this species. For more information, contact Yves de Soye/Loro Parque Fundación
    ...
....Moluccan Cockatoo Projects, Indonesia - funded by the  Loro Parque
Fundación. From successive reports in recent years, it appears that the Moluccan Cockatoo (Salmon-crested Cockatoo/Cacatua moluccensis has become very scarce in the wild state on the largest  island where it occurs, Seram in the Maluku Islands, and population decline has been attributed to continued widespread trapping and trade. Most of these reports have come from surveys in the   Manusela National Park, and much more   observation is required in other parts of the island to obtain a better understanding of  the current wild status of this species. The LPF has been involved with two projects which intend to provide this information and use it in conjunction with education and other measures of a conservation strategy. For more information, contact Yves de Soye/Loro Parque Fundación.

....Chattering Lory and other Parrots in Halmahera, Indonesia - funded
by the Loro Parque Fundación. The island of Halmahera in the North Moluccas (Maluku Islands) contains no less than nine species of parrot at least two of which, the White Cockatoo Cacatua alba and Chattering Lory Lorius garrulus, are globally threatened with extinction. Other species are the Red-flanked Lorikeet Charmosyna placentis, Violet-necked Lory Eos squamata, Moluccan Hanging Parrot Loriculus amabilis, Moluccan King Parrot Alisterus amboinensis, Red-cheeked Parrot Geoffroyus geoffroyi, Eclectus Parrot Eclectus roratus, and Great-billed Parrot Tanygnathus megalorhynchus. The island is also at the moment still relatively well-forested, but agricultural encroachment is expanding and, unlike for several of the neighbouring islands, the Indonesian Government has not yet declared any protected areas in Halmahera. Endemics and Specialities

in Indonesia

Comb-crested Jacana - Photo copyright Wildwatch Australia
Photo copyright Wildwatch Australia
Information on endemics and specialities is derived from Sibley & Monroe checklists and bird distribution lists in Thayer's Birder's Diary - Version 2.05, supplemented by material found in Where to watch birds in Asia  - by
Nigel Wheatley. Asian speciality birds, while not endemic,
are those that can only be found in three or less countries of Asia. Information on endangered birds is derived from the IUCN Red List, Birdlife International.  The endemic, endangered and speciality birds may be uncommon, extremely rare vagrants, may be extirpated in the country now or may only be present in migration. However, documented sightings of each species noted below have been made in Indonesia.

    ....Fielding's Birding Indonesia : Fielding's In-Depth Guide to Birding
on the World's Largest Archipelago - by Paul Jepson, Staff Fielding Worldwide Inc. - The archipelago of Indonesia is a birder's paradise, with 17 percent of the world's species represented, 381 of which can be found nowhere else on earth. It's a rare pleasure to see the birds of Java, Bali, and Nusa Tenggara, of Sumatra, Sulawesi, and Irian Jaya, a pleasure which takes a good bit of preparation, organization, and advance detail. Fielding's Birding Indonesia is as fine a guide (to the region, the logistics, and the birds) as you could want.
