"Stamping" Around Britain

May 13 - June 6, 2000

If my husband wasn't a stamp collector, what possible reason could I have for taking three weeks out of our busy lives to wander around England and Scotland checking out great places to go birding? Luckily, Duncan decided to attend the Canadian Philatelic Society of Great Britain conference in Hove/Brighton from May 16 to 20th and then the Royal Philatelic Society annual conference in London from May 21 to 24, 2000. I got to go along for the ride, including the ride to Scotland to visit his mother and sister. What a great excuse to go birding!

After a sleepless night on Air Canada (if you have to go without sleep, it's far better to do it in business class - thanks to Air Miles!), we landed at Heathrow just after lunch on May 14, Mother's Day. We picked up our rental car, and proceeded onto the M25 - it was a hair raising experience, driving on the "wrong" side of the road at high speed in all that traffic. Of course, we got lost on the way to our hotel in Effingham, Surrey, but discovered this tranquil scene on the River Mole, not 20 feet from a very busy road. A good omen for sure!

Come along with me on a journey of discovery throughout England and Scotland. Click here for the complete list of species seen. There are hundreds of great birding locations, and I could only visit a few (and in most cases for only an hour or two each), but here's what I saw and where I went...
