Systematics follows An Annotated Checklist of the Birds of the Oriental Region (Oriental Bird Club, 1996). We observed 180 species of birds in Malaysia (The Gap, Fraser's Hill and Taman Negara) and 12 species of mammals. Highlights include: Crestless Fireback, Malayan Peacock Pheasant, Fire-tufted Barbet, Wrinkled Hornbill, Oriental Dwarf Kingfisher, Hodgson's Hawk Cuckoo, Jambu Fruit Dove, Black Eagle, Blyth's Hawk Eagle, Rusty-naped Pitta (only heard), Dusky Broadbill, Long-tailed Broadbill, Malayan Whistling Thrush, Chestnut-capped Thrush, Lesser Shortwing, Slaty-backed Forktail, Blue Nuthatch, Sultan Tit, Black-and-white Bulbul, Streaked Wren Babbler, Golden Babbler, Black-throated Babbler, Silver-eared Mesia, Black-eared Shrike Babbler and Pin-tailed Parrotfinch.

UG]) include: Bamboo Woodpecker (Chow, The Gap), Rusty-naped Pitta (AK saw one near signpost 19, on Bishop's trail), Rail-babbler (seen by AK after taping it out on Jenut Muda trail; when we tried together with him on our last afternoon in Taman Negara it started to rain...), White-tailed Robin (Fraser's Hill), Pygmy Wren Babbler (AK Mager trail, Fraser's), Cutia (3 seen by Chow at Fraser's Pine Resort), Rufous-winged Fulvetta (Fraser's Hill).

Rusty-naped Pitta Pitta oatesi Unfortunately only heard at Fraser's Hill: 2 18/6 (Hemmant and Bishop's trail), 3 19/6 (1 Hemmant and 2 Bishop's), 1 at the ridge above the gate 20/6 and 2 21/6 (Bishop's trail and 1 near Puncack Inn). At least 5 heard altogether. This species proved to be very difficult to see, although seen on Bishop's trail by Irish birder Aidan Kelly a few days before our visit. We were very close to two calling birds (probably not more than 20 metres but couldn't see them. Frustrating!) Birds respond to imitation but according to other birders they seldom come out on the trail because too many birders have tried with tape recorder in the last years. Birds were calling frequently during ouir visit.

Malayan Whistling Thrush Myophonus robinsoni 1 seen well 20/6 during ca 15 minutes at 14.40 in stream ca 100 metres above the gate in Fraser's Hill (Tomas).
Chestnut-capped Thrush Zoothera interpres 1 Taman Negara, Jenut Muda trail near first stream (from Tabing trail) 23/6. The bird came flying along the trail and perched for a few seconds on a branch one metre above ground (Tomas). Superb!
Eyebrowed Thrush Turdus obscurus 1 male on Tabing trail, Taman Negara 25/6. This species normally occurs here during winter and this was obviously a summering bird.
Lesser Shortwing Brachypteryx leucophrys Fraser's Hill: 1 female Magar trail 19/6, 1 male Bishop's trail 19/6 and 3 (male, female and juvenile) seen very well on Bishop's trail near stream at signpost 11 21/6. The Malayan race of Lesser Shortwing is dark blue with a small eyebrow and looks like White-browed Shortwing.
