This trip was a part of my teacher-training program and not a pure birding trip. My time in Tanzania began with three weeks of work in a secondary school in Marangu. After this, I went on a four-day safari visiting Tarangire, Ngorongoro Crater and Lake Manyara. After a few more days back in Marangu I went out travelling again, mostly in the Zanzibar Islands. One condition for my backpacking was to minimise the baggage, so I left my scope in Sweden. Therefore, all my birding was done with just binocular (8x30) and hence I missed many birds, especially birds of prey, larks and pipits. If you join an organised safari to Tanzania, I can really recommend a scope.
Tanzania is a beautiful and friendly country that I without doubt can recommend a visit to.
The currency is Tanzanian shilling. When I was there, the rate was 1 US$ = 900 Tz. shilling or 1000 Tz. shilling = 11 Swedish crowns. I brought travellers checks and US dollars.
During my eight weeks in Tanzania I spent 1200 US$ in pocket money. The flight ticket from Sweden was 700 $.
Marangu
Marangu is a small village at 1600 meter on the slopes of Kilimanjaro. It is situated 35 km from Moshi and just 4 km from the gate of Kilimanjaro National Park. The nature in Marangu is wonderful, and worth mentioning are the beautiful waterfalls. Every morning between 6.15 and 7.30, I went birding in the surroundings, and during my three weeks I managed to see about 100 different species of birds. The melt water from Kilimanjaro gives rise to many brooks and waterholes, and as you find them almost everywhere, there are no real hotspots. On the other hand, this gives you the possibility to enjoy a bath in the cold and clean water.
There are just two hotels in Marangu, and they are both luxury and very expensive. To avoid this problem, one could stay in Moshi and make daytrips to Marangu. It takes 45 minutes with a dala-dala (Tanzanian taxi) and costs 500 shilling.
Kilimanjaro National Park
To see real rainforests and high altitude birds you must enter the national park, which costs 25 US$ a day. Many tour companies offer excursions to the peak (5895m). The tour will take you 5 or 6 days and costs around 500 US$ or 600 US$, all are inclusive (guide, porter, cook, food, water and night in huts). I planned to beat the peak and did some dealing at the gate, however bad weather and the lack of money stopped my climbing dreams. The prizes I got for a five days tour were:
5 x 25 US$ entry fees
1 x 20 US$ rescue fee
4 x 50 US$ nights in huts
5 x 3 US$ guide and porter fees
or 348 US$ in total, so if you have time, dealing is worth while. For your own safety, make sure that you get a good guide. If you want to see high altitude birds and are out of money, you could sneak into the park through the village and then walk in to the rainforest. This is of course an illegal move. From my experience, the birds do became nicer and nicer with altitude.
Moshi
Moshi has no good birding places, but you can find nice, cheap hotels and restaurants. I went birding in YMCA’s garden and in the Umoja Lutheran Hostel`s garden. In the Umoja’s garden I found the rare Magpie-mannikin. The rural area outside Moshi is good for birding. Take a dala-dala and ask them to stop wherever it looks nice. I spotted my one and only Blue-naped Mousebird just outside Moshi.
Dar Es Salaam
If you like birds this enormous town will make you disappointed, but if you like shopping and noise it is heaven. Dar Es Salaam is hotter than hell and full of energetic people. I managed to stay here for two nights only.
Unguja (Zanzibar Island)
On Unguja I visited Stonetown, Paje and Nungwi. Stonetown is a nice town with a lot of good food and clinging salesmen. You should definitely visit the night market and eat barbeque food. In Stonetown I did no birding at all. Paje, on the other hand, was an excellent place for soft birding. During the midday heat, when the tide was high, there were hundreds of terns and waders roosting at the beach. It was perfect to sit there with a Hawaii-shirt and a cold drink, just watching all the lovely birds.
One day in Paje (13/11-01), I saw this at the beach:
Saunder`s Tern ~ 100
Grey Plover ~ 40
Ringed Plover ~ 200
Greater Sandplover ~ 150
Mongolian Sandplover ~ 15
Sanderling ~ 100
Curlew Sandpiper ~ 500
Terek Sandpiper ~ 20
Common Sandpiper ~ 5
Common Greenshank ~ 20
Ruddy Turnstone ~ 50
Whimbrel ~ 30
Crab-plover ~ 80
I spent hours just sitting there. From Paje we also went on a nice dolphin tour to the south coast. On the way back from Paje to Stonetown we stopped at Jozani Forest. The walk in the forest was an unforgettable experience. You should definitely go there, not only to see the forest but also the endemic Zanzibar Red Colabus Monkey.
I spent my last week in Nungwi, which is well known for its parties and nightlife.
The beach and the lighthouse were good places to watch birds, and for example, I saw a Masked Booby during my breakfast there. I wasted one evening watching TV with some Englishmen. Arsenal was struggling against Manchester United and of course, a Swedish player turned out to be the hero of the game. Fredrik Ljungberg was excellent and he scored the important 1-1 goal for Arsenal, who later won the game with 3-1.
Pemba Island
We arrived to Pemba early in the morning and decided to stay in Mkoani for three nights and make daytrips from there. It was perfect to walk around in Mkoani for birding. Especially the fields and tide shores were good.
We spent one day in Ngezi Forest. It offered nothing special, if you are not interested in herbs and spices. To hear the Pemba Scops Owl you should go there by nighttime, I did not. The Vumawimbi beach close to the forest was nice.
If you travel to Pemba you should definitely visit Misali Island. This island is beautiful and very quiet. The snorkelling in the corals outside the island is world-famous. I snorkelled for a whole day, and it was amazing.
We were at Pemba during Ramadan, so no restaurants were open during daytime. Things are a little bit more complicated on Pemba compared to Unguja, but the nature is more beautiful and you have the chance of spotting the four endemic species of birds. I managed to see all except for the owl.
The Safari
I went on the safari with a group of 24 swedish teachers. We started and finished the trip in Moshi. The schedule was:
Day 1 – Transport to Tarangire National Park where we spent the afternoon. We spent the night in tents at a campsite outside Tarangire.
Day 2 – Morning in Tarangire N.P. Then transports to Mto Wa Mbu were we stayed at Twinga Campsite and Lodge. Very nice rooms. Afternoon I was birding in the Mto Wa Mbu surroundings.
Day 3 – Whole day in the Ngorongoro Crater National Park. Night at Twinga.
Day 4 – Early morning birding in Mtu Wa Mbu, there were some good fields close to Twinga. Then we spent the morning in Lake Manyara National Park. On the way back to Moshi we made a stop at a Masai village.
This is the short safari. You could add two more days and continue to Serengeti or use one day in Arusha National Park instead of two days in Tarangire. In favour of your bird list, it is of course better to spend a few more days and visit as many Parks as possible. I regret not visiting Serengeti, but now at least I have something to look forward to when coming back.
The prize for the Safari was 60 US$ per day and person, all-inclusive. When you agree on the prize, make sure that everything you need really is included (a good 4-WD vehicle, breakfast-lunch-dinner, mineral water, tent, sleeping bags, entrance to national parks every day and so on.) It is normal to pay a tip to the crew. We paid 10 000 Shilling each for the whole trip. The normal prize for an all-inclusive safari is 75 US$ per day. The Ngorongoro Crater was the highlight of the safari. Do not miss it!
Accommodation
The prizes are what we paid for one night after some dealing.
Dar Es Salaam: YWCA – 8 000 Shilling for a double including a very bad breakfast. Shared facilities. A friend of mine was robbed here. She lost almost everything (pass, money, travelling checks, flight ticket, VISA card). It took her two days to fix everything. So Watch Up!! Note that YWCA is just for women and couples (friends!).
Luther House Hostel – 13 000 Shilling for a double room where we stayed three persons. No breakfast but bathroom in the room. Close to the harbour where the ferries to Zanzibar depart.
Pemba, Mkoani: Sunset Lodge (Mkoani Guest House) – 15 US$ for a triple and a bad breakfast. But a very good price considering prizes on Pemba. Nice room and shared facilities.
Narrow Street Hotel – 27 US$ for a triple with bathroom and good breakfast.
Unguja, Paje: Paje By Night – 50 US$ for five persons in a nice bungalow with bathroom. Extremely good breakfast with booth fresh bread and juice. You can also get the egg exactly as you wish. It´s only 50 metres to the lovely beach. I can really recommend this place!
Unguja, Nungwi: Jambo Brothers – 24 US$ for three persons in a double with bathroom. Breakfast included and just 30 metres to the beach. A quiet place in Nungwi compared to others.
It is easy to travel in Tanzania. The infrastructure is good and the prizes are low. Here are some prize examples during our journey.
Moshi ® Marangu: 35 km which takes 45 minutes with a dala-dala and costs 500 Sh.
Moshi ® Dar Es Salaam: 567 km which takes 7 hours and costs 16 000 Sh with the luxury Scandinavian Bus.
Dar Es Salaam ® Stonetown: 90 minutes with the catamaran Sea Star Services LTD. It costs 35 $.
Stonetown ® Paje: a tour operator takes around 25 000 Sh for the trip, so find many pals.
Stonetown ® Mkoani, Pemba: The slow ferry, Serengeti, took 8 hours and cost 20 $ for 1st class.
Mkoani ® Konde: A local bus took 2 hours and cost 1000 Sh.
Konde ® Ngezi Forest ® Ras Kingomasha ® Vumawimbi beach ® Konde: Hired taxi (5 hours) cost 8 000 Sh.
Konde ® Chake Chake ® Mkoani: 2 hours with a Dala-dala and costs 1 100 Sh.
Stonetown ® Nungwi: 1.5 hours with a tour operator costs 3 000 Sh.
Dar Es Salaam ® Air port:
We paid 12 000 Sh for two persons witch probably is far too much.
