Endemic to Lake Alaotra in Madagascar The use of monofilament nylon gill-nets which undoubtedly kill many diving waterbirds and the introduction, in about 1986, of the carnivorous fish Ophiocephalus, which is probably capable of eating adults, have been a major factors.

Endemic to Guatemala. Last recorded in 1986. Extinction due to predation by introduced Large-mouthed Bass, reed-cutting, and tourism development (increased boat traffic).
