Tour the
Fort
Steele Heritage Town, a restored turn-of-the-century
town. Sited 16 km northeast of Cranbrook (which is 109 km. east of
Creston), this restored ghost town boats over 60 restored buildings which
were the originals in the Fort Steele of 1887. During the peak season,
authentically-costumed townsfolk greet visitors, demonstrating pioneer
skills such as blacksmithing, horseshoeing, quilting, spinning and weaving.
Street dramas portraying historical events are performed by professional
actors throughout the day. The Fort Steele Steam Railway offers 2.5 km
rides to a point where passengers can view the Kootenay River. Other attractions:
Kershaw General Store, City Baker with wood-fired brick oven, and Northwest
Mounted Police post. Open year-round; admission charge during summer season.
